Staying High
Recently I
have been thinking about
resilience. For some time I have harboured
a theory that runners – particularly long-
distance runners – reap a host of benefits
from our sport in terms of health and
wellbeing, but I’m not convinced resilience
is one of them.
I was speaking with someone who is very
dear to me who lost his wife and soulmate.
They had 12 blissful years together, then one
morning she was gone. I asked where he
drew his strength from and he smiled and
said, “The sunrise. Sometimes I find myself
unable to sleep and thinking sad thoughts,
and I tell myself ‘Hey: the sun is coming up
soon’. Then I get up and watch the sun rise.
It is a miracle that happens every day, and
every day it brings hope.”
His resilience struck a chord with me –
as does the inherent resilience in children.
I recently saw the movie
Lion.
Tiny Saroo
was lost in Calcutta at five years old. His
circumstances were severe and changing
by the minute but he adapted, unthinking,
never losing hope, faith or the will to carry
on. Resilience.
So why do I think runners lack
resilience? We run, our bodies flood with
adrenaline and endorphins and it feels so
gooooood. So we run more – more often
and longer distances. Eventually, we reach
a point where that hyperactive state isn’t
limited to the five or 10 or 20 hours we
spend in our shoes each week. We get a wee
bit high from planning a run, anticipating
it, preparing for it, then the running (of
course), the post-run high, and sharing and
reflecting on the run.
Here lies the rub
Before we know it, we are spending a
disproportionate amount of time in that
heightened state and it becomes the norm.
The flip side is that normal days can feel flat,
boring, lacking something. And when the
proverbial hits the fan, when the big stuff in
life ups and smacks us in the face and we find
ourselves staring down some dark days, we’ve
got a lot further to fall, coming from our
chemically-elevated state. Maybe, as runners,
we need to be a bit mindful about balance.
Someone who
excels at balance is Brad
Dixon, although in this issue he urges us
to step outside of our comfort zone: to ‘get
comfortable with being uncomfortable’
and experiment with cold therapy. On the
