pages of one of Fleming’s novels, David explores the possible link
between secret British shipping movements during, and after, World
War II and the use of some very unusual Jamaican postmarks. Could
these postmarks have been used to send secret codes, known only
to a few high-ranking intelligence igures? It certainly adds new
meaning to the word ‘postcode’. Turn to page 62 and make up your
own mind.
There’s more covert operations in John Kimbrough’s latest article
on the postal activities of the Confederate States of America, in
particular the 10c. and 2c. Altered Plates, which were produced
by De La Rue and smuggled to The South during the American
Civil War. Although the Confederacy never actually printed any
stamps from the Altered Plates, they were used to make numerous
printings over the years, some of which were produced with some
less than respectable motives. Discover more on this, plus a host of
other British, Commonwealth and foreign stamp and postal history
articles in this month’s GSM .
I’m sorry to end this month’s editorial on a sombre note, but
I’m very sad to report the passing of Peter Jennings, one of GSM ’s
longest-serving contributors and a larger-than-life character who
was known and respected by many in the philatelic world. Peter was
responsible for numerous ‘scoops’ for GSM over the years and was
even the driving force behind several stamp
issues around the world. I leave it to previous
GSM editor, Hugh Jefferies, who worked with
Peter for many years, to give his thoughts
on Peter and his vast contribution to the
philatelic community (see page 16).
Although I have attended numerous Stampex shows over the years,
Autumn Stampex 2013 was a real milestone for me as this was
the irst such event I attended as editor of Gibbons Stamp Monthly .
As always, the show was the perfect venue to meet up with old
acquaintances and to make new ones. In particular, it was a real
pleasure to talk to GSM readers at the Stanley Gibbons’ stand. It’s
always a rewarding experience to meet the people who we all work
so hard to please every month, and to have the opportunity to
get some one-on-one feedback on GSM . Thanks to everyone who
spoke to me at the show. If you didn’t make it to Stampex this time,
make sure you read our report on the exhibition in this month’s
‘Newsdesk’ pages. Hopefully, I will see you at the Stanley Gibbon’s
stand for a chat next time.
Another thank you I would like to make has to be to the Kiribati
Philatelic Bureau who kindly supplied the free stamps that come
with this month’s issue. A special thank you also goes to Hugh
Bennet whose support was vital in making this free gift a reality. The
