a special
treat for anyone
interested in
stalking – a free
stalking guide.
It is mainly
aimed at those of
you have had little or no experience,
and I hope this might tempt you to
have a go. The day I took up stalking
was life-changing, and I don’t think
I’d have ended up here if I hadn’t
been lucky enough to have had a
great mentor. There’s loads of useful
information in it, including a brief
explanation of the six different deer
species in the UK, how to get some
experience, what kit you’ll need, how
to gralloch and much more besides.
Many of you are, of course, seasoned
stalkers, but I’m sure there’ll be a few
T
useful nuggets in there, no matter how
much you’ve done. After all, one of the
great things about stalking, and I believe
all of the shooting disciplines, is that there
is always more to learn. If it’s all old-hat
to you, and you’ve been out chasing deer
for years, why not give it to someone
who never has been? Perhaps you can
get a newcomer to the sport started!
Of course the issue is packed with
a huge amount besides the stalking
supplement: we’ve got a brilliant and
practical guide on how to snare rabbits,
what to think about if you’ve organised
a roost shoot and a great review of some
night-vision kit for those of you who
are chasing Charlie this spring. There’s
also a fantastic ten pages of Shooting
Answers, lots of gundog advice and a start
on the corvid control. We’ve also got a
special page of all the latest information
on the Field & Country Fair, which I’m

One of the great things about stalking is
that there is always more to learn
certainly looking forward to this June.
This time last year, I had just taken
over as Editor, and I can’t quite believe it’s
been a whole 12 months. The time and
the issues seem to have flown by, and I’ve
enjoyed every minute of it. I’ve been very
lucky to have worked with the talented,
knowledgeable and brilliant Sporting Gun
contributors and team, who have made
it such an easy task editing this fantastic
magazine, not to mention the inimitable
Robin Scott, Editor-at-large, who is ever-
generous with his advice and experience.
Sadly, though, I’m leaving after we’ve
sent this issue to the printer. The offices
of Sporting Gun are moving to a new
location, and for practical reasons I won’t
be moving with the rest of the team. I’m
sure I’ll be replaced very soon — after
all, who wouldn’t want this job…
In the meantime, the magazine
will be in the very capable hands of
the team here at Time Inc UK.
All that remains is for me to
thank you, the readers, and to wish
