omehow or other I think I’ve
set myself up for a fall by
agreeing to enter a fun gundog
competition with my black Lab,
Sam, at our upcoming three-day Field
& Country Fair starting June 10.
This exciting new fieldsports gathering
being held at Cornbury Park already
boasts an impressive gundog line-up so
just why the organisers decided to slot
in an inter-magazine challenge between
The Field, Shooting Times, Shooting
Gazette, Shooting UK, Country Life and,
yes, Sporting Gun is beyond me. All I
can think is that they want to give the
readers a bit of a laugh at our expense.
Doubtless it’s going to be a hoot, but
let me say here and now that it’s fixed.
I know the credentials of some of the
dogs taking part, but there’s a niggling
suspicion that one or two unscrupulous

of this event. Sam doesn’t “do”
dummies; he needs real game to float
his boat. We might as well be handed
the wooden spoon right now.
But enough of that, read all about

Special? Absolutely. I knew from the
moment Time Inc. – owner of all the
magazines mentioned – revealed we were
going to do our own show that it would
somehow be different to all the rest. And
the more I see of the growing exhibitors’
list and demonstrations, the more I’m sure
of it. Everything, and everyone, has been

carefully selected to attract and appeal to
shooters, anglers and falconers passionate
about country sports and the countryside.
It will also captivate newcomers wanting
to get a proper taste of rural pursuits
without the distraction of bouncy castles,
kiddies slides and candy floss stalls.
The Field & Country Fair might not
be the biggest show I’ve ever been to,
but that is actually part of the whole
charm and attraction – plenty enough to
more than fill your day with us, but not
too big to be impersonal and become a
tiring trudge from one end to the other.
Hopefully I’ve whetted your appetite
to come along and buy me a pint in
one or other of the real ale watering
holes lined up for the three days.
In the meantime, I’m going to dig
out those dummies and see if I can
disprove the theory that you can’t
teach an old dog new tricks.
