We’ve got some great new faces to
introduce to you this month. Rupert
Blackwall has taken over from Jason Harris
as our gun tester. Sadly for us, Jason’s
business as a gunsmith needed more time.
Rupert is also a gunsmith, and what’s
more, he’s a passionate Shot, both with
rifle and shotgun. He spends a fair bit
of time in Latvia, taking stalkers out
to find some huge stags, and between
that and his gunshop near Charlbury,
R.J.Blackwall’s, he’s kept fairly busy.

We’ve also got a great new page with
a quick and easy recipe, a practical
tip of the month (feel free to send
suggestions!) and a fantastic new
cartoon: Sporting Gun’s very own
Ned and Ted. I’m looking forward to
following their mishaps and adventures.

wallplanner for next year, which has
some great sporting images from the
talented Redspot Artists. Not only that,
but it’ll let you know what date Sporting
Gun hits the shops every month.
A reader recently told me he had kept
his wallplanners going back years – he’d
saved them because he wrote down what
he’d shot and where on the relevant date,
like a quick gamebook. What a great idea
- I’m going to do the same from now on!

I hope you’ve all had some very
good shooting so far this season. I
had a fantastic day at Newton Rigg
recently, where the second year
gamekeeping students run the entire
operation. It poured with rain, but I
was truly impressed by how well the
partridges were flying. The beaters’
line was one of the most enthusiastic
and orderly I’ve seen for ages - a rare
combination. If the standard of that
day was anything to go by, there’ll be
some very good young gamekeepers by
the end of next year. They’re a credit to
Malcolm Riding, who runs the course.
As we went to press there were finally
some predictions of colder weather.
Who knows, we may even have a white
Christmas… I’ll be spending much of
mine up on the high seat, trying to get
our does culled, and hopefully we’ll see
a few birds on our little shoot at home.
