Roleplay 1

EXAMINER'S ROLE

You are a hotel manager. "The business has not been particularly good recently and you are desperate to attract some guests.

Ø       Rooms with the view of the lake face the street - rather noisy

Ø       Cable TV available for extra charge

Ø       Bringing pets is against the hotel rules

Try to persuade the customer to leave the pet at the pet hotel a few blocks away, but if that doesn't work, agree to make an exception for him/her if he/she pays double.

 

QUESTIONS

1.       Do you enjoy staving at hotels? Why? Why not?

2.       What, in your opinion. makes a hotel attractive?

3.       Which accommodation would you prefer for holidays: a hotel or a room in a private house?

 

(If the candidate is good enough, try this question)

4.       The number of hotels in Poland is insufficient. Do you think we should fill that gap with luxurious or cheap family hotels?

 

CANDIDATE'S ROLE

You are at a hotel trying to book a room for your family for next  weekend.

You want:

Ø       A view of the lake

Ø       A quiet room

Ø       Cable TV                 

Ø       To bring your pet dog which is against the rules.

Try to persuade the hotel manager to allow this.

Offer to pay extra, but try not to pay too much.

Roleplay 2

EXAMINER'S ROLE

You are a friend of the candidate's. You have been feeling down recently because of some trouble at work and complications in your personal life, which you will not admit. He/She is determined to take you out tonight because he/she thinks some time out will help you relax and forget your problems. However, you are so much down that you resist any of his/her suggestions finding most peculiar excuses not to join him/her. Please be so kind and give up after several of his/her attempts.

After, all night out is something you used to enjoy a lot.

 

QUESTIONS

1.       Do you enjoy going out'? Why? Why not?

2.       Which places in your town or city would you recommend?

3.       In most large cities in the world life starts after 9pm. while cities in Poland look deserted  soon after dark. What are the reasons for this?

(If the candidate is good enough, try this question)

4.       Some cities have restaurants and bars for people of different age groups. e.g. you must be over the given age to go in. Do you think it's a good idea? Give reasons.

 

CANDIDATE'S ROLE

The examiner is a friend who looks a little sad.

You don't want to ask questions, but you do want to cheer him/her up.

 

Ø       Offer to take him/her out tonight.

Ø       You know about a number of different events in the city.                             

Ø       Persuade your friend to choose one.

Roleplay 3

EXAMINER'S ROLE

You are an acquaintance of the candidate's. He/she has a big` idea of travelling around Europe this summer, but hasn't got a car: You have one, so he/she will try to convince you to travel with him/her. You find the idea attractive, but there are some problems. You need a new passport, international driving lic2nce, and car insurance. 1~Iost worryingly, you remember that in the past your potential partner always tried to avoid paying for anything. If you find that he/she is ready to fully share the costs of the journey, agree to travel with him/her.

QUESTIONS

1.       Do you enjoy travelling? Why? Why not?

2.       To travel well, people should "travel wisely'. What must you do to "travel  wisely''?

3.       Visiting places is interesting, but travelling is a waste of time. Do you agree? Give reasons.

 

(If the candidate is good enough, try this question)

4.       Teleportation is the ability to move from place to place by the power of your brain, without the need to use any means of transport and in no time at all. Would you like to be capable of teleportation? Give reasons.

EXAMINER'S ROLE

You are a British officer

You have come to live and work at the candidate's unit.

You would his advice on living in the area.

Ask about:

local transport. .................. You don't want to rent a car. What about buses, taxis?

shopping............................. You're interested in food shopping and clothes.

things to see ....................... React to his suggestion(s).

places to go out ..............:... You particularly like films and opera.

places to eat ....................... Arrange to go there with him.

The candidate speaks first, saying:

"Welcome to our unit. Can I help you with anything?"

When you wish to finish, say, "Right! Thank you very much for your help

 

QUESTIONS

1.       What do you like about the place where you live?

2.       What can you do there in your spare time?

3.       What places can you visit nearby?

4.       Do people in your area go out, or do they usually stay at home? What about you?

NB If you have already discussed the candidate's home town, ask about another town and make comparisons. If you have already discussed his spare-time activities, ask about his family or friends

 

CANDIDATE'S ROLE

The examiner is a British officer.  He/She has come to live and work at your unit.

Tell him/her about living in your area.

He/she may ask you about:


Ø     local transport ............ Suggest a rented car.

Ø     places to go Shopping

Ø     places to go out ....... Ask what he likes to do.

Ø     things to see

Ø     places to eat. ............... Suggest a restaurant.

Roleplay 5

EXAMINER'S ROLE

The candidate is a friend.

Her wants to buy a second-hand car.

You want to sell him yours..

 

Answer his questions about model, mileage, age, fuel consumption, price, and any other questions.

Be deliberately vague or unhelpful with a few of your answers-so that the candidate asks for more detail. (With weak candidates you may have to say "Do you want more detail?")

 

The candidate speaks first, saying: "Have you sold your car yet?"

If the candidate doesn't know how to finish, say: "Do you want time to decide?"

Finish with: "That's fine. I'll see you later. Good bye."

 

QUESTIONS

1.       Is it a good idea to buy a second hand car? Why/Why not?

2.       Have you got a car? Tell us about it.

3.       What car would you buy if you had a lot of money'?

4.       What are the problems with driving in Poland?

 

CANDIDATE'S ROLE

 

The examiner is your friend. You want to buy a second-hand car.

The examiner wants to sell you his/hers. Find out about the car.

 

Ask questions. If an answer is too general, ask for more detail.

Ask about:


Ø     the model

Ø     mileage (ilosc przejechanych mil)

Ø     age

Ø     fuel consumption (zużycie paliwa)

Ø     price

Ø     anything else you think is important


 

Finally, say you need time to decide. You must also talk to your wife (or fiance or husband).

You speak first. .

Begin: "Have you sold your car yet?"

 

Roleplay 6

EXAMINER'S ROLE

You are a shop assistant. The candidate is a customer.

He bought a Japanese radio last week, but it is faulty.

He wants a replacement or his money back.

He claims that he has lost the receipt.

 

Be polite, but make sure that the candidate is telling the truth.

Ask questions about:


Ø       when he bought the radio.

Ø       the salesman or saleswoman

Ø       the price

Ø       when he noticed the fault


 

Let the candidate convince you to order a replacement. If he is weak, agree quite soon.

If the candidate is strong, try to make him say more to persuade you.

 

The candidate speaks first saying:

"Excuse me. Can you help me?"

When you wish to finish, say:

"Thank you, Sir. The radio will be here on Saturday."

 

QUESTIONS

1.       Have you ever bought some thing faulty? Or do you know somebody who did?

2.       Do you think shops should replace goods without asking questions?

3.       What electric goods do you own? Tell us about them.

4.       Is it true that Japanese goods are the best?

5.       Tell us about your favourite radio stations.

CANDIDATE'S ROLE

You are a customer. The examiner is a shop assistant.

You want a replacement or your money back, for some faulty goods.

Unfortunately you have lost the receipt.

 

You bought a Japanese radio last week, but the sound is faulty.

Explain the problem, and say what you want the shop to do.

The assistant may be suspicious.

Answer his her questions about:

Ø       when you bought the radio.

Ø       the salesman or saleswoman

Ø       the price

Ø       when you noticed the fault

Be polite, but try to make the assistant do what you want.

Roleplay 7

EXAMINER'S ROLE

You are travel agent. The candidate is a customer.

He wants to book a holiday.

Try to sell an expensive package.

 

Find out where and when he wants the holiday.

Offer your most expensive package.

Answer the candidates questions.

Your best package includes air travel, four star hotel, three meals a day, five sightseeing excursions, and costs $1,000

When the candidate objects,. offer cheaper alternatives:

(If he fails to object, say "Would you like to know about something cheaper?")

The candidate may stop the exchange when he likes your offer.

If you want to stop the roleplay, tell him you may have something cheaper next week.

The candidate speaks first, saying:

"Can you tell me about package holidays?"

You finish with:

"I hope to see you again soon, Sir! Good afternoon."

 

QUESTIONS

1.       What sort of holiday do you prefer?

2.       Tell us about a holiday abroad which you've had - or one which you'd like to have.

3.       Where do Polish people go on holiday in Poland? Where do they go abroad?

4.       Is it important to go for a holiday every summer? Why? Why not?

 

CANDIDATE'S ROLE

 

You are a customer. The examiner is a travel agent.

You want to book a holiday.

You don't want to pay too much.

 

You want a two-week package holiday in Spain in August.

You prefer a lazy holiday by the seaside, with no sightseeing.

Listen to the travel agent's recommendations.

Ask about:

Ø       transport to Spain

Ø       accommodation

Ø       food

Ø       extras

Ø       price

Tell the agent if you think something is unnecessary or too expensive.

If you like a package, tell the agent you'll come back with your wife (or husband or friend).
