--MORE--(17%) [ Forwarded from comp.sys.ibm.pc ] This is an urgent forward
from John McAfee:

A distribution diskette from a corporation calling itself PC Cyborg has
been widely distributed to major corporations and PC user groups in Europe.
The diskette contains a highly destructive Trojan Horse. The Chase Manhattan
Bank and ICL Computers were the first to report problems with the software.
Systems that ran the enclosed programs had all data on the hard disks
destroyed. Hundreds of systems were affected. Other reports have come in
from user groups, small businesses and individuals with similar problems. The
professionally prepared documentation that comes with the diskette purports
that the software provides a data base of AIDS information. The flyer heading
reads - "AIDS Information - An Introductory Diskette".

If the software is installed using the included INSTALL program, the first
thing that the program does is print out an invoice for the software. Then,
after the system is re-booted a random number of times the system self
destructs.

Whoever has perpetrated this monstrosity has gone to a great deal of time, and
more expense, and they have clearly perpetrated the largest single targeting
of destructive code yet reported. The mailings are professionally done, and
the style of the mailing labels indicate the lists were purchased from
professional mailing organizations. The estimated costs for printing,
diskette, label and mailing is over $3.00 per package. The volume of reports
imply that many thousands may have been mailed. In addition, the British
magazine "PC Business World" has included a copy of the diskette with its most
recent publication - another expensive avenue of distribution. The only
indication of who the perpetrator(s) may be is the address on the invoice to
which they ask that $378.00 be mailed:

          PC Cyborg Corporation
          P.O. Box 871744
          Panama 7, Panama

Needless to say, a check for a registered PC Cyborg Corporation in Panama
turned up negative.

John McAfee

Cyborg? Why does that name sound familar? Some movie bad guy group?

I'm looking for a database that will support the REU and be able to handle a
couple of thousand records. If there's nothing for the REU, what's a good
database for small business use that can handle a lot of records? I need to
know right away! Thanks

Best database I've seen is SuperBase ..

No REU support, but version 3.0 does work with the Lt. Kernal and the 1581.

A database with a couple thousand records .. you SURE you want that in the
REU? One power flicker and all your data turns into vapor.

I would recommend that you obtain the new Color released version of Vision
Color BBS v1.0 from kerry Messana at 1-315-342-3209===Data

His voice number is 1-315-342-1237

I myself have the new Color Version now but will put it up next year.

Don't have time now.

It does support SFD's and 1541's but the best bet is to run off of a Lt.Kernal
Hard drive which I do.

Also the interface which plugs into the cartridge port is crucial to making
any BBS work with a particular drive.

Also there are some future releases of the same type interface that kill off
the operation of the BBS whereby the older releases of the same interface
hardware/dos/chips let everything work fine.

MY recommendation having used 1541's/SFD's/LT Kernal 40 meg is to get a LT
Kernal and dump all the other 3rd party hard drives/SFD's/ etc. except
obviously the 1541's.

In fact I am using SFD's to just back up the LT.Kernal.

Thus-you essentially have 3 problems. Does the BBS Dos work with the drive
and the computer. In other words you may have serious "Contention" problems
between all these items.

I have heard that the Pratical Modem 2400Sa doesn't work right with the C-64
or C-128. Especiall in download/etc. files.

They tell me that the modem does something and drops carrier right in the
middle of the download and everything is lost...
