@BEGIN_FILE_ID.DIZ-------------------------------------------- Did you hear rumors of a heated server war between IRCops lately? Wanna know what's up? EFNet is split up now -- here are the facts! -------------------------------------------- @END_FILE_ID.DIZ What's wrong with EFNet (Or something you thought to be EFNet..) these days? Where are all the Americans? Where are all the Europeans? Is there some kind of a huge netsplit or what? Read this text file if you wondered those things during the past week. Maybe it's about time somebody shed some light on the situation at hand in the form of a wide-spread textfile. Maybe you heard "rumors of a heated server war between ircops" lately... In other words, the EFNet is split up now. I've included the mail posted to alt.irc here. ---[ CUT HERE ]----------------------------------------------------------- From operlist-request@kei.com Wed Jul 10 17:50:02 1996 Received: (from listmgr@localhost) by kei.com (8.7.5/8.7.3) id SAA14124; Wed, 10 Jul 1996 18:41:05 -0400 (EDT) Resent-Date: Wed, 10 Jul 1996 18:41:05 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199607102240.SAA14062@kei.com> X-Mailer: exmh version 1.6.5 12/11/95 To: operlist@kei.com, irc-eu@insa-lyon.fr Subject: Announce of new IRC-net. We are hereby declaring that we break out of the current IRC-net to form a replacement. Who we currently consist of: Australia Europe Japan Canada Parts of US. What are the requirements to join at this stage? Will to COOPERATE with the other admins, and stop childish ego-trips. Being willing to accept a set of rules as a basis for further discussion. Until better rules are discussed, this set will be the one that is valid. In case of contradictions, this document is valid and overrides the rules. Being willing to accept to be required to delink some servers, that does not meet this requirement. These decisions might be temporary or permanent. This will be decided by the current members of the net, and at this stage, we will mostly accept major hubs only. A transition period that's not too short and not too long will be allowed, but by august 15th or earlier, everyone should comply with the rules. What server version will be used? At this stage, there is no requirement beyond what's in the ruleset. It's likely that Europe will be running plain 2.9.1 (with ND and CD), and it will be required at some time soon that everyone also upgrade to 2.9.1. Whether or not smaller zones within the network can run a version of TS, is an issue that can be discussed later. At this stage, we will not want any threats to delink other servers because of "breaking up TS zones" or similar. I don't know whether or not it was a smart move to divide EFNet in half. At least I'm not too pleased about this dramatic change, it clearly divides the IRC community in two halves; the Americans and the Europeans. What the IRC networks need to do is to unite. All their efforts and resources combined would result in a lag-free IRC network where realtime talking would be possible, without netsplits lurking behind every corner. The thought of it is absolutely ridiculous, but we'll soon need a search engine to locate some guy from the jungle of different IRC networks! I'll leave it up to you to take appropriate actions, now that you know what's going on. - Deadbeat/The Sharks
