Not long ago I talked to a
gentleman while setting up
something on the technical
end of our publication. Curi-
osity got the best of him and
he began to ask me questions
about the magazine. He
spoke of a train set that had
been set up at his work over
the holidays and the excite-
ment in his voice was infec-
tious. It was something that
invoked nostalgia and, per-
haps, a renewed interest in a
hobby long forgotten and
pushed aside by the onset of
adulthood.
After I spoke to this man, I
began to reevaluate my own
life. I mean, trains are con-
nected to my daily life in
some shape or form, but how
often do I really take the time
to “stop and smell the
smoke?” – to put aside the
business and focus on all the
things that made me fall in
love with trains in the first
place?
How many of us only dust off
our locomotives when we
have a scheduled run session?
Or pull out our cameras only
All Scale Rails
when a special or chartered
train comes through our
town? Do you only flip
through a book when it’s new
and then retire it to a dusty
bookshelf or do you pull it
out periodically to review
photos or subjects of interest
to you?
Don’t get me wrong – I un-
derstand how life takes prece-
dence over hobbies, but what
kind of life would it be with-
out those pockets of enjoy-
ment?
We so often focus on the act
of preservation of our interest
in trains and model railroad-
ing and how to invoke an in-
terest in the future
generations so that they may
continue to carry it forward
that we lose touch with the
fact that we are still avid hob-
byists ourselves and likely
will be for the remainder of
our lives. But if you are still
intent on passing your pas-
sions on, remember that your
passion is a necessary ingre-
dient for you to be able to ef-
fectively do that. Who’s
going to buy something from
2017
a salesman that doesn’t be-
lieve in what he’s selling?
Try to find that spark that fu-
eled your many years of hob-
by enjoyment, hold on to it,
and fan that flame.
